The product installation instructions for part # 83660 doesn't specifically address backing the trailer, but if you're towing a short trailer that's prone to jackknifing or you're maneuvering into a tricky parking spot that would require a sharp turn while backing, it's a good practice to temporarily remove the unit to avoid damaging it. You should also know that it's recommended that the tension be removed from the unit when driving on slippery or icy pavement.
It's also recommended that 2 units be used on trailers that are greater than 26 feet in length.
I've linked you to an installation and a product description video featuring the Reese friction sway unit.
