How Long Does a Friction Sway Control Bar Last

Question:

Im considering adding a sway control to my rig no weight-distributing. My questions are: - how long should the friction material last? - When the friction material on a Curt 17200 wears out, can it be replaced? - If not, do you sell a sway control that has replacement material available? Thanks

The longevity of the CURT Friction Style Sway Control System, # 17200, or any similar system is going to depend on how it is used, how it is set, driving style and conditions, and any number of other factors. Even a rough estimate is tough to gauge.

But, under normal conditions where sway is not a big issue, you may expect it to last the lifetime of the trailer. If sway is a constant problem that you battle on a regular basis, you will most likely need to replace the unit.

The inner bar is not available as a replacement. Bascially, the way the bar system works is there is a steel bar inside and the outside steel housing clamps down on it to provide the friction. The bar material is not like brake pad material like you would find on some friction sway control systems on a weight distribution system.
