Does 5000 lb Trailer Coupler Have to be Replaced with Coupler with Same Capacity

My trailer has a 5k coupler does it have to be replaced with a 5k

Expert Reply:

Depends on the weight of the trailer. If the trailer will never weigh more than 5,000 lbs then you wouldn't necessarily have to go with a 5k rated coupler like the Demco part # DM14793-52 that you referenced. 5,000 lb couplers are very popular, so if you were just wanting something priced a little better the part # CA-5100-Z would work great too.

Great answer was looking for a bolt on 5k with ez latch for a frame but not a lot of choices in 5k bolt on any suggestions. Thanks for your help.

@RonnieK For easy bolt-on installation, with the auto-latch feature, that is rated for at least 5000 pound trailers, a value-priced choice is the Demco # DM37ZR. I have also attached a link with some other choices. Please note that these are 10,000 pound rated hitches with 2 inch ball couplers.
