Brake Controller and 7-Way Recommendation and Installation on 2013 Jeep Wrangler

Question:

what 7 pin connector and brake controller do i need for a 2013 jeep jk? it now has a 4 pin connector for my boat trailer which i want to keep or change out if a new one comes with it. The jeep did not have a factory tow package. i believe it was added with the tow hitch but is old

You'd want to begin with a functional 4-pole trailer connector which will access the taillight circuits for you. If the one on your Jeep no longer functions, or it it's old enough that you don't have much confidence in it, I'd recommend replacing it using part # 118416.

For a brake controller, I'd recommend a proportional type brake controller. A proportional controller has internal sensors that can determine how quickly the tow vehicle is braking. It will then send the appropriate amount of voltage to the trailer brakes so that the tow vehicle and trailer brake at the same rate for safe, effective and predictable braking.

The Tekonsha Primus, part # TK90160 would be a good but reasonably-priced option. You'll also need our brake controller installation kit, part # ETBC7. The install kit includes the adapter to convert the existing 4 pole trailer connector to a 7-way as well as all the wire, circuit breakers and hardware needed to complete the installation.

I'll link to videos that show how the # 118416 trailer wiring harness installs, and a video showing a typical brake controller install on a 2013 Wrangler Unlimited. I'll also link to a video that explains how the Primus brake controller works.
