The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13587 is confirmed to fit all trim levels of you 2005 Mercury Monterey. This custom fit class III receiver is rated for maximum capacities of 3,500lbs towing and 350lbs of tongue weight. If you use a weight distribution hitch maximum capacities increase to 5,000lbs towing and 500lbs of tongue weight.

For towing small trailers you will need one of 2 wiring harnesses. If your Mercury has the plug for a factory towing harness behind the bumper you will need the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # C56673. It includes the wiring as well as fuses and relays needed to power the connector. If you do not have the plug behind the bumper the Harness # C56190KIT which will connect to the factory taillights to get the input signals from your Mercury. A power wire will need to be ran to the battery to power the convertor on the wiring connector. Mounting Brackets # 18144 and 18140 will allow you to secure the trailer connector end of the wiring harness to your receiver without drilling.

I have included installation videos below for you to be able to correctly identify if you have the factory connector behind the bumper. It should be the only connector directly behind the center of the bumper.
