What is the Tongue Weight of the etrailer.com Coupler CT-3002-Z

Question:

I have a boat trailer with a 3 inch square tube tongue. I want to slide a 2 1/2 inch od square tube 1/4 inch wall thickness inside for a retractable extension. I found Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler - Trigger Latch - Zinc - 2inch Ball - Bolt On - 3,500 lbs Item # CT-3002-Z on your web site and have a couple of questions about what I want to do. First question - What is the safe towing tongue weight with this coupler? Second question - The extension will always be retracted when not at the boat ramp, but the amount of extension required to protrude to bolt the CT-3002-Z will lengthen the tongue a few inches. Should this change the trailer geometry enough to introduce problems? Im not asking for an engineering study, just a well considered opinion. Current setup tows my ComPac 16 with no problem. If it makes a difference in your answer, the weight of the boat ready to go is about 1900 pounds. Thank you.

I spoke to a technician about the tongue weight on the etrailer.com # CT-3002-Z, and it would be up to 15% of the 3,500 capacity. This would give you a maximum tongue weight capacity of 525 pounds.

As to the length, it really shouldn't make too much of a difference. As long as the coupler is fastened securely to the tongue of the trailer and the weight does not exceed 525 pounds, you should be perfectly fine. I will say, however, that it never hurts to load the trailer up several ways to make sure you are not too front or rear heavy, just to make sure.
