Curt vs. Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Comparison for a 2016 Subaru Outback Wagon

Question:

Plan to use a slot bike rack and was wondering if the Curt Hitch was a better option over the Draw-Tite Hitch. Some criteria follows: 1. I saw comments about a sway strap. I currently use the rack with my 2010 Nissan Altima Hidden Hitch Class 2 and dont need a sway strap. The Curt hitch looks like a better hitch, will I need a sway strap? How about if I go with the Draw-Tite option? 2. Is the Curt Hitch sufficiently under the bumper such that we will not bump into it while getting into the back? 3. How about rust protection, whats the best option? I would be open to all input you may offer. I did see the video but it didnt answer these questions.

The Class II Curt Hitch # C12136 and Class II Draw-Tite Hitch # 36493 for your 2016 Subaru Outback Wagon are very similar, but every Class I and Class II and some Class III Curt Hitches require stabilizing straps to be used when towing non trailer loads. When stabilizing straps are not used on these hitches, the warranty is void and will no longer be covered by Curt. Draw-Tite hitches do not require stabilizing straps to be used on non trailer loads.

The Curt and Draw-Tite Hitches have the same maximum Gross Trailer Weight, however, the Curt hitch has a larger maximum tongue weight capacity of 525 lbs. compared to Draw-Tite's 300 lbs. tongue weight limit. However, you are limited by your vehicle's tongue weight capacity of 200 lbs. so both will work for your needs. Also, both have visible crosstubes so they both will stick out a little behind your 2016 Subaru Outback Wagon.

I recommend the Draw-Tite hitch for your 2016 Subaru Outback Wagon over the Curt Hitch because you will not have to worry about using stabilizing straps # 18050 for your hitch. Also, both companies use a black powder coat over an e coat base for rust protection, but Curt has been known to use a little more powder coat which has caused some fit issues with some of our customers.

I attached an installation video of the Curt and Draw-Tite Class II Hitch on a Subaru Outback Wagon you may want to check out.
