Brake Controller and 7-way Trailer Connector Installation on 2017 Chevy Traverse

Question:

Hello, I have a 2017 traverse v6 but I don’t believe it has the tow package due to it was the lowest trim model and I need to install a hitch. What would be the best/easiest brake controller to install? Are they plug and play? I will be towing a dual axle camper that weighs 4150lbs. Thank you.

According to my research, all 2017 Chevy Traverse models are prewired for a brake controller. If you were wanting to go with the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885 (great choice), you'll need the # 3026-P brake controller wiring harness. If your Traverse isn't equipped with the factory 7-way trailer connector at the rear bumper, you can easily add one using the # 118271 wiring harness, which also includes the fuses and relays necessary to activate the tow package wiring. The wiring harness doesn't include mounting brackets, so if you'd like to mount the trailer connector to the hitch crossbar, you'll need a # 18136 No-Drill bracket and a # PK12711U bracket to attach the 7-way to the no-drill bracket.

I've linked to install videos for the 7-way as well as to a brake controller install on a 2015 Traverse. The video shows a different model controller being installed, but the procedure would be the same with the Prodigy P2 on your 2017 Traverse.

If you haven't yet chosen a hitch, I'd recommend the Curt Class III, part # 13424. For a ball mount, use # D-4, Hitch Pin and Clip, # PC3, and # 19260 for a 1-7/8 ball or # 63845 for a 2 inch ball.
