Troubleshooting Curt Triflex # C24VV Issues After Unit Overheating

Question:

I have a Curt Triflex. It got hot when I had a wheel to fail and I replaced all on that wheel Hub, bearing, Magnet etc. With that incident the controller got very hot and blew the fuse. I fixed that wheel and ed an new fuse. Upon starting to travel again on the other side the two wheels grab and the break will not release for several seconds. Do I need another Triflex Brake Controller. the one I have is a C24VV. When I apply the brakes sometime it will lock the brakes. Any help would be appreciated.

First, check the display on your Curt Triflex # C24VV for any error codes that come up with applying the brakes with your trailer connected. If you get an error code, you can reference the user guide to find a potential solution. If you don't have any error codes showing on the display to help you diagnose the issue, I would start by checking the wiring on your vehicle and on your trailer, particularly the blue brake output wire. Check the wires for any signs of damage such as exposed wires or pinch points, and replace any damaged components. You can use a circuit tester such as # PTW2979 to test that your brake output wires are receiving power when they should.

You can also test the brake controller pretty easily by cutting the blue brake output wire a few inches behind the controller and using a circuit tester on that wire. You want to make sure you are only getting power when using the manual override. If you are getting power at any other time, or if the power lingers for a time after releasing the override, you need to replace your brake controller. You can buy another Triflex unit, or you can upgrade your controller to something more reliable, like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195.
