How Can I Be Sure My Curt Triflex Brake Controller Is Working Worrectly

Question:

I just installed a Curt Triflex brake controller om my 2012 Tundra, which is equipped with the towing package so the controller simply plugs into the prewired plug in the panel in front of the driver door. With the new controller plugged in but not connected to a trailer, the unit flashes 9.7. Is this normal? Is it possible there is a problem in the controller? We pick up our new trailer 5-hours away next week and over two mountain passes. So, I want to be confident it is working and I also dont have a way to see if the controller is working by simply connecting it to a trailer. Grateful for any suggestions you might have.

Hello Dan, I can definitely help with this. It is completely normal for the Curt TriFlex brake Controller # C24VV to show the current gain setting when the brakes are applied, or when the manual override is pressed. It sounds like you have the gain currently set at 9.7 which is why you are seeing this number flash on the display. So, it sounds like it is working correctly and there is no problem with the controller.

I suggest trying to turn the gain down. This way you can be 100% sure it is working as intended. That, and you will probably want to turn the gain down anyways, as 9.7 is very close to the max setting. I am not sure exactly how much your trailer weighs, but generally you will want to start with a lower setting and only go higher as needed. If you want to try to lower the gain setting you press the mode button until you reach gain, then use the up and down arrows to adjust.

Also, since your Tundra already has the factory brake controller connection, I have to assume your controller is working correctly and ready to use.

You could always use a 7-way tester like part # C66NR to verify that all of the functions on the 7-way are working correctly. This is really not necessary though as I do feel that everything is working just fine. Feel free to reach out to me if you have further questions.

Thanks Jesse. Sounds like good news. I did try to turn down the gain and nothing happens when I turn the knob -- the gain stays the same. Is that to be expected?

@Daniel You say your controller has a knob that you can turn. It sounds like you are using the older model of the Curt Triflex C51140. On this one the sensitivity adjustment is small buttons on the side of the controller. The knob is the manual override. So, turning the knob should show the current sensitivity setting to flash on the display. The instructions I referenced above are for the new Curt Triflex Next # C24VV. It still sounds like it is working correctly though. You are not getting any error codes or anything and nothing seems out of the ordinary.
