Correct Replacement Brakes and Hub/Drum Assembly for '97 Jayco Popup
Question:
Hi, I recently had my breakaway activate while driving and ended up burning up my brakes. Im replacing my hubs/drums which houses hydraulic brakes. The drum is stamped with HD-700A, which appears to sell for 1inch spindles with L44643 inner/outer bearings. Trouble is, my spindle is BTR 1.063 and my bearings are L44649. So, Im looking at your part # Code: 8-276-5UC3 or 8-173-16UC3 Im not sure I see the difference. Are these the replacement for my hubs? My trailers GVWR is 2450, which is over the weight stated for these products 2200. However, I cannot find anywhere any 4 on 4 hubs sold with higher weight ratings. Any guidance you can provide here would be great. Finally, due to the high heat buildup during the actiation of the breakaway while I was towing, Im planning on replacing the hydraulic break assemblies including backing plates. Is there anything else I should consider replacing as a result of this incident? Thank you for your time,

The difference between part # 8-276-5UC3 and part # 8-173-16UC3 is that the 5UC3 works with a 7" x 1-3/4" brake assembly while the 16UC3 works with a 7" x 1-1/4" brake assembly brake assembly. Other than that they use # L44649 inner and outer bearings and a 10-9 grease seal that has the 1.5" inner diameter. You definitely want to go with assemblies that match your bearings so if you're able to confirm that you have L44649 bearings then I'd use one of the options mentioned above.
The GVWR of a trailer is typically a little more than the axle weight rating(s) simply because there will be some tongue weight that is either handled by the trailer jack or the tow vehicle. That's why you're having trouble finding something rated all the way to 2,450 lbs.
To replace your brakes we have the brake kit # 23-398-399 which measure 7" x 1-3/4" so you'll want to pair these with the assembly # 8-276-5UC3.
Definitely check your trailer tires for bald spots. If your breakaway kit worked like it should have then your trailer brakes would have locked up and your tires should be pretty damaged on one side. If you can let me know what size tires you have (you can see this on the sidewall) then I can make a recommendation for you.
