Can I use the 12V Socket to Power my Curt Powered Tail Light Converter ?
Question:
My 2018 VW Golf Sportwagen TSI has a 12 volt accessory socket in the cargo compartment just above the right rear wheel. Can I use that as the power supply rather than running a wire directly to the battery? This socket is on when the car accessory/ignition switch is on. The maximum power draw from the socket is 120 watts, according to the owners manual.

Helpful Expert Reply:
The Curt Powered Tail Light Converter with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector part # C59236 requires a connection directly to the battery using the provided in line fuse holder.
It is more of a safety issue than anything else. There is no way to determine what wire size and what other items in the vehicle are on that same circuit. With too much draw damage can occur to the vehicles electrical system. This is why we can only recommend that you hook directly to the battery per the manufacturer's instructions.
I've linked an installation video to give you a great idea on where we ran the wiring for our customer.
