Will the RBW X-16 5th Wheel Hitch Fit on a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 Crew Cab

Question:

I am looking into buying a 2006 Rockwood 8281SS. It has the Pin box Venture Technologies, PN CJ20517. I am also buying the 5th wheel receiver from the seller, RBW Ind Model X-16 X-1001 Crossbar hitch and X-1010 Mountng Bracket. Will this receiver transfer from his 2004 Ram 1500 to my 2010 Ram 1500 crew cab and dual exhaust? Also if I need a sidewinder, which one? Thanks

The RBW X-16 fifth wheel hitch will transfer from a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 to your 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 Crew Cab as long as the base rails in your 2010 Ram are standard above-bed base rails.

If you do not already have base rails installed in your truck, then you could install the Reese Custom Base Rails and Installation Kit, # RP50142-58, which is compatible with your RBW X-16 fifth wheel hitch. This kit includes industry standard base rails, but also has vehicle specific mounting brackets for your truck.

If you also purchased the base rails and frame brackets from the seller, then the brackets will most likely not fit on your truck. RBW fifth wheel products are no longer available, but I can tell you that all of the custom and semi-custom mounting bracket installation kits that we carry are not transferable between the two vehicles.

A sidewinder or sliding fifth wheel hitch is only necessary if there is not enough clearance between your truck cab and the trailer when making sharp turns. If your truck bed is between 6 ft and 8 ft, then you could look into a sliding fifth wheel hitch like the Reese 16K Fifth Wheel Hitch, # RP30051, rather than a Sidewinder pin box.

If your truck bed is shorter than 6 ft, then you will most likely need a sidewinder pin box as sliding hitches do not provide enough clearance. At this time the only sidewinder that we carry for your 2006 Rockwood 8281SS with Venture CJ20517 Pin Box is the Reese Sidewinder Fifth Wheel King Pin, # RP61450. This king pin is rated at 16,000 lbs, you should verify the weight of your trailer fully loaded and ready to tow before purchasing a hitch or sidewinder.

I have attached three help articles on fifth wheel hitch installation and on sidewinders for you to review.
