5th Wheel Towing Capacity and Hitch Recommendation for 2010 Ram 1500 with 5.7L Engine

Question:

I have a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.7 and 3.92 gear. Max trailer weight is 10,200 lbs. Does adding a fifth wheel increase the towing capacity and ride quality when pulling a trailer? If so, by how much and which setup is needed to make this possible? Thanks

I took a look at the online specs for your 2010 Ram 1500 and while some model trucks (typically the 3/4 ton and 1 ton models) do have higher weight capacities for 5th wheel trailers than with standard bumper pull trailers this is not the case with your Ram. The 10,200 pound max trailer weight you found for your particular model Ram 1500 is its capacity whether it's a standard bumper pull or 5th wheel trailer.

To tow a 5th wheel trailer you will need to install a set of base rails in the truck bed that the hitch will mount to along with the 5th wheel hitch itself.

If you have the 6-1/2 foot bed I highly recommend the Curt A16 5th Wheel Hitch # C16521 along with the Base Rail Install Kit # C16422-204. The A16 features an interlocking 2-jaw system that will provide an extremely secure connection to the trailer and allow for a quiet, smooth ride during travel. Its fully articulating head helps with hookup and the non-binding slider gives you 12 inches of front to back clearance to gain the needed cab clearance when making sharper turns.

I have attached a short video demonstration that you can check out as well.
