Availability of UV Ray Sunlight Resistant Winch Strap and How to Prevent Premature Deterioration

Question:

You have quite a selection! Why though, do many of them have one strength rating eg, 4000# in the headline, and another, lower one eg 1400# in the listed specs? Others, the two figures match. Whats the deal? It would also be beneficial to know if any are resistant to UV deterioration. Ive broken the OEM strap three times in a little over 2 years always in the space between the winch and the hook when the boat is loaded. Have to assume its sunlight related. Would love to find one that doesnt deteriorate from sunlight.

The two different ratings you see are the WLL (working load limit) and the maximum load strength (break strength).

WLL pertains to the capacity that you want to take into consideration under normal usage. The max break strength however, is the tested amount of force applied (in pounds) before the strap breaks. The WLL is one third of the max break strength. Depending on the manufacturer, some may only list one or the other, or both.

The best way to protect the winch strap from the damaging sunlight and UV rays is to use a cover like the Dutton-Lainson Winch Cover # DL24051 which is 10" long x 8" wide x 8 " tall.

You can also coat your winch strap with the TruXedo Pro-Tex Protectant Spray # TX1704511. This is typically used on truck tonneau cover and convertible top applications but it will also work very well to provide your winch strap with UV protection equivalent to SPF 30.
