Hitch Recommendation for 2017 Audi A4 Allroad for Towing 960 lb Travel Trailer

Question:

I have a 2017 Allroad that I want to put a hitch on. I want to pull a lite travel trailer that weighs 960lbs. All they offer is the class 1 hitch: is there no other option for this wagon?

In addition to the Curt # C11448, EcoHitch offers a hitch for your Allroad A4 that has a 2 inch receiver, part # 306-X7370. This hitch has higher ratings, with a towing capacity of 3500 lbs and a 525 lb tongue weight capacity. The advantage to this hitch is that the receiver tube is removable. Once it's removed, the hitch will not be visible at all.

This hitch should be able to handle the weight of the small travel trailer you mentioned, but keep in mind that the towing capacity of the vehicle is a bit less than that of the hitch. From my research, I've found that the Allroad has a 1179 lb maximum tow rating, so your trailer will be pretty close to that. Since any towing system is only as strong as its weakest-rated component, you'll want to be sure not to exceed that 1179 lb figure.

You'll also need a trailer wiring harness, a ball mount, trailer ball and a retaining pin and clip to complete your towing system.

For a wiring harness/trailer connector, I'd recommend # 119250KIT

It'll be a little difficult to recommend a ball mount ahead of time. I know that when the # 306-X7370 is installed, it has a 11-1/2 inch receiver height. On average, the coupler height of a level trailer is between 16-19 inches high. So, if you got a ball mount with a 5 inch rise like # C45336, you'd very likely be close enough.

For a trailer ball, for a 2 inch ball use # A-90 or # 19260 for a 1-7/8 inch ball. For the 1-7/8 inch ball, you'll also need the # 58184 bushing. Your trailer coupler should have the necessary trailer ball size stamped into it if you're not sure what you need.

I've linked you to installation instructions for the hitch and the wiring harness.
