When installing the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13303 on your 2017 BMW X1, the heat shield does not need to be trimmed.

Needing to trim a car's heat shield is common though and would not negatively affect your BMW at all. I have added links to video installs of both hitches for you to take a look at.
