Effect on Trailer Handling from Installing Axle Over-Under Flip Kit

Question:

I read one of yalls answers on raising a trailer by over/ under kit for axles. Ive thinking of doing this because I only have 6-8inch of clearance between top of my bed and bottom of my gooseneck. My question is how much will it change the pull of my horse trailer because it pulls amazing right now cant tell its even back there at any speed or in 50-60 mph wind gust

You ask a very good question and I am happy to respond.

Axle over-under kits # K71-384-00 and # K71-385-00 will raise the height of a trailer by the sum of two dimensions: the axle diameter plus the height of the leaf spring stack. So a 3-inch axle and a 2-inch thick leaf spring stack will mean that an over-under kit will result in 5-inches of total lift for the trailer. The linked photo shows the relative positions of spring and axle after installation of a kit.

Raising the height of trailer by 5-inches will naturally also raise its center of gravity unless you can also lower the placement of your loaded cargo to compensate for this height increase. (I realize the horses may have something to say on this point!) A higher center of gravity will mean there is potential for some degree of additional sway.

How much of this you notice depends on specific driving conditions. When going down a straight highway on a day without high winds and without lots of passing semi trucks you may not notice any change at all. Wind and also air blasts from passing vehicles will make it more likely that you will notice the change, but after a few hundred miles you may no longer notice it at all.

If your leaf springs happen to be well-worn, as opposed to being brand new, they may be soft enough for you to notice the change more than you would with new springs. But since you say you feel no ill effects now from wind I would not worry about a drastic change to the feel of the trailer.
