4-Way to 5-Way Adapter Recommendation for Boat Trailer
Question:
Recently purchased a J2 Speedboat and Nipper trailer from China not recommended. Installed the wiring on both sides of the trailer from the rear lights to the front of the trailer. My vehicle has a 4-way plug and I need to connect the wires from the trailer to the 4-way plug. Have the usual color code white, brown, green and white wires however, there is a red wire also. What is the red wire for and how is the best way to connect the 5-way wiring to the 4-way plug? Please advise. Thanks!

An extra red wire for trailer wiring is not commonly seen, but since you said this is a boat trailer it's most likely for a reverse lock out solenoid. Does the trailer have surge brakes? If so, this would be the case. This circuit would need to get run to the reverse light circuit of your tow vehicle so that the actuator can allow the trailer to be reversed. We have vehicle 4-way to 5-way adapters as part # 20036 but before we go down that route let's first be sure the red wire is the reverse lock out solenoid. Can you trace the wiring or check the coupler to see if there's a single wire that runs to the rear of it?
