Replacing Slipper Springs With Double-Eye Springs

Question:

So, I recently bought a boat and the trailer needs more work than I had expected. One of the issues is the back bracket that holds the slipper leaf is broken. Id like to upgrade the leafs and put bigger tires on it anyway. Is there a way to use u bolts of some kind to attach the slipper part or should I use eye to eye with new hangers? And do hangers need to be welded? Its an old Sears Gamefisher trailer. I have a 13 ft aluminum boat on it. Thanks.

There are no U-bolts to attach the slipper part, I recommend replacing your slipper springs with double eye springs. In order to do this you need to know the weight rating of your axle as well as the length from center eye to center eye so you can properly place your hangers.

For example, the 6-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # e27SR measures 26 inches from center of spring eye to center of spring eye and has a 4,500 lbs capacity; you will need to find springs that match your trailer's capacity as closely as possible.

The other thing you would need is a hanger kit such as # APS3, which has 1-1/2" tall front hangers, 1-1/4" tall rear hangers, and 3-1/8" shackle straps. The correct hanger kit will depend on the hanger size you need and the hangers are going to need to be welded on. The photo I have added should be useful to help you determine where the hangers should be welded.

I have also added a link for you to a help article on double eye suspension which I recommend checking out.
