Towing Capacity of 2007 Dodge Durango
Question:
My 2007 Dodge Durango has a built in tow bar but no hitch reciever attached or wire harness. If I attach a receiver hitch directly to the bar. How much tow capacity is that built in factory tow bar going to handle? I asked the dealer ship but he feed me some lines and really didnt know that the vehicle came with a bar already built in. Can you please help. I know the hitch receiver you sell is rated for 600 tongue and 6000 lb tow but what about the bar your video shows it attaching to. Thank you

The bar you are speaking of is capable of towing up to the tow capacity of the vehicle, if the vehicle is correctly equipped. The receiver you referenced, the CURT Class III part # 13072 can handle 6000 lbs, 600 lb TW. When equipped with a weight distribution system, the receiver can handle 9000 lb towing, 900 lb TW.
I did some research on the Durango, and found some references listing the towing capacity at 8950 lbs. Some references state that that figure was only for the 5.7 L hemi, other references did not mention the engine size. You will want to consult your owners manual for the exact capacity of your particular vehicle.
The one sure-fire way to determine how much your vehicle can tow is to consult the ID plate on the driver's side door jamb. Look for the GCWR, the Gross Combined Weight Rating. This is the maximum amount that the vehicle and the trailer can weigh. From this number, subtract the weight of the tow vehicle, with passengers and gear. The result will be the maximum weight of the trailer you can tow.
