Losing Power from Tailight Circuit Entering the Converter Box on a 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander
Question:
My car is 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander. Installed the hitch and trailer wiring from the dealer. I have a small utility trailer from Lowes has not been used since I got a new Outlander. Today just noticed the tail light very dim. I do a test at the output brown tail light wire comes out from the module. It shows only 6.6 volts. Another test at the input brown tail light wire to the module. It shows 13.3 volts. Is Module Powered failure? It never happened before. After I moved License Plate to a different position and install a new Powerfist LED License Plate Light Voltage Rating: 8 to 14 V, Wattage Rating: 0.3 W and Current Rating: 0.025 A It works Do you think the LED License Plate Light kills the module? Please advise. Thank you for your help. Note: 1 I used the utility trailer less than 10 times from the day I purchased from Lowes in 2014, 2 The ground wire/connect has been checked

If you are receiving 13.3 volts on the taillight circuit going into the converter box and only 6.6 volts coming out, then this would indeed indicate a bad converter box. It is not uncommon for converter boxes to fail over time as they are after all, just an electrical component. We have found that over the years, Tekonsha brand wiring products tend to have the greatest longevity and fewest problems. The license plate light you installed should not have had an effect on the converter box output.
For a replacement wiring harness, I recommend using the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector part # 118482 if you do not have the factory tow package or part # 118277 if you do have the factory tow package. The converter box itself is not exactly replaceable. Both of the above options are almost entirely plug and play. I have attached an install video on the harness for models with the factory tow package for you as well.
