How to Determine the Correct Replacement Double-Eye Trailer Leaf Spring for a Boat Trailer

Question:

If the leaf spring hangers are 26 1/2 inches eye to eye and the old 4 leaf springs measure 26 1/2 inches what would be the proper replacement spring lenght? Keep in mind there are equalizer brackets on the rear hangers. Any help would be appreciated

Expert Reply:

A trailer leaf spring will wear out over time and the wear will likely lengthen the spring. Therefore, the correct replacement leaf spring will likely be shorter than the leaf spring you have on your trailer now depending on the amount of wear that has occured.

If the leaf springs you have on your trailer now are 26-1/2" long from the center of each eyelet, I recommend using a 26" long leaf spring like part # e77SR for 2,000 lb, part # e27SR for 4,500 lbs, or part # e94SR for 6,000 lbs.

All of the above springs feature a 4-leaf pack. You will need to know your axle capacity in order to choose the best one for you. The leaf spring will have a capacity similar to the axle. If you don't know your axle's capacity you can measure its diameter.

1,000 lb - 2,000 lb: 1-1/2" - 1-3/4" diameter
3,500 lb: 2-3/8" or 3" diameter
5,200 lb - 7,200 lb: 3" diameter
8,000 lb: 3-1/2" diameter
9,000 lb: 4" diameter
10,000 lb: 5" diameter
