In order to carry a bike on your 2012 Honda Civic, I recommend using a trailer hitch and hitch mounted bike rack. This option will give you the greatest variety of carriers to choose from, it will provide the easiest way to load/unload your bike, and you can always swap out the bike rack for a cargo basket or small trailer.
In order to do the above, you are first going to need a trailer hitch for which I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C11391. This hitch has a Class I rating and will provide you with a 1-1/4" receiver tube opening. It is a confirmed fit your 2012 Civic. I have attached a sample install video so you can see what all is involved.
Then for a bike rack, I recommend the Kuat Transfer V2 Bike Rack for 1 Bike - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Wheel Mount # KU64FR. It works with your class 1 hitch and is a top-tier rack for carrying 1 bike.
