Parts Needed to Tow Trailer and Carry Hitch Bike Rack on Toyota Venza

Question:

Is there an adapter for a 1 1/4 hitch so that I can tow my small Coleman pop-up camper and use my Kuat 2 bike rack? Or, is there a bike rack that would allow me to tow the camper? Vehicle is a Toyota Venza with 1 1/4 hitch. Is that considered a class 2? Thanks!

Dual-receiver adapters such as # D-192 and combo ball mount/receivers like # D210 are made for sturdier 2-inch hitches but no such item is made for a 1-1/4-inch hitch since using one would put too much stress on the hitch and possibly even the vehicle too.

Your hitch will have a sticker that indicates its Class Rating (Class I or Class II) and its weight capacity, both tongue weight and towing weight.

Your Venza owner's manual will tell you if the vehicle can tow and how much weight it can tow. I reviewed an online manual for the 2015 model year and on page 288 the towing capacities of the different versions of the car are listed in a table. Towing capacity varies from 1000-lbs to 3500-lbs depending on how the car is equipped from the factory. Definitely check your manual to be sure your specific Venza has the towing capacity you need for your particular Coleman pop-up.

We DO have hitch adapters that allow use of a 2-inch bike rack like your Kuat in a 1-1/4-inch hitch, but these do not also allow simultaneous towing. Such items are # HTAD and # HT5R. Do note that use of such adapters causes a 50-percent reduction in hitch capacity and it is recommended to use a stabilizing strap like # 18050 to reduce motion of the installed bike rack.

If you want to tow and carry a bike rack you will be better of installing a 2-inch hitch like # 13356 or # 75663 and using item # D210. For 4-pole wiring for the trailer you can use kit # 118482.
