Cargo Carrier Recommendation for Low Ground Clearance 1-1/4 inch Hitch
Question:
I have 2015 gti with a 1 1/4inch hitch. Id like to put a cargo carrier on it to put a couple suite cases on, but I have concerns about ground clearance. The hitch is pretty low. Ive hit it a couple times just pulling out of a parking lot if the asphalt has a big bump where it transitions to the parking lot. What are my options? Is there a basket with an angled hook up or do I need a hitch riser? I have no accessories yet so if I had to go from 1 1/4 to 2inch that would be fine as I would just use a 2inch carrier then. Just 2 or 3 suit cases so I cant image it being more than 200lbs at most. Whats a packed suit case like 50lbs at most and thats a giant suit case. Im talking 3 carry on size ones.

The best option you have would be a cargo carrier that has a rise built into the shank that fits your hitch size directly like the Pro Series Cargo Carrier part # 63155 which has a shank with a rise of 3 inches.
You'll still need to be careful on incline changes but this would be your best option.
