Recommended Transmission Cooler for 5.3L Silverado 1500 Towing 5K Travel Trailer in Mountains

Question:

I have a 2013 Chevy Silverado 1500 with a 5.3 and tow a 5000lb travel trailer. I often approach 210+ degrees when towing in the mountains which requires frequent fluid changes because of discoloration and burning. I would like to keep my operation temp at or below 185. which cooler do you recommend.

Since transmission coolers are not really vehicle-specific you are free to use as large and efficient a cooler as you have space to mount one. Generally the best mounting point for a passive cooler is right in front of the AC condenser where the cooler will receive maximum air flow for best cooling.

Lots of helpful general information can be found in the two linked articles concerning transmission coolers.

All coolers recommended for your 5.3L 1500 are shown on the linked page. You have options in several classes, the higher the class meaning the greater the cooling power.

As examples, if you have space to fit a cooler that measures 11W x 12T x 7/8D you can use the high-efficiency Class IV cooler # D13504 from Derale. For a smaller and lower-cost Class III cooler you might prefer Derale # D13502. You will also need Snap-In Radiator Adapter Fitting # D13035.
