One guideline you can use to determine if you need a transmission cooler is to check your vehicle owners manual. The owners manual should state if it is recommended to add an aftermarket transmission cooler for towing.
You cannot over cool transmission fluid, especially when towing. Even a slight drop in the temperature of the fluid can help extend the life of the transmission. So, adding a transmission cooler can be beneficial, especially if you will be towing often.
To choose the correct cooler, you will need to measure to determine how much room you will have to mount the cooler. The most efficient place to mount a transmission cooler is behind the front grille in front of the radiator (see FAQ).
The Derale Cooler # D13502 would be a good option for a cooler if you have room to mount it. The # D13502 measures 11 inches wide, 7-1/4 inches tall and is 7/8 inches deep.
I have linked an FAQ article on transmission coolers, and a video installation of a cooler on a 2006 Dodge Caravan that you can use as a reference.
