Recommended Trailer Tires for 2012 Palomino Puma Fifth Wheel Weighing 8,500 lbs

Question:

There is a lot of confusion out there for the best tires for a fifth wheel RV. I have a 2012 Palamino Puma 245RKS. Its gross weight, with all gear is 8500#s. It currently has Akuret ST205 75R15 tires. We plan to make a long trip this summer to the Pacific Northwest, then maybe Southwest. Some sites recommend changing the wheels and use an LT tire. What do you recommend?

We do recommend using ST, or "special trailer" tires; these are made to have a stronger sidewall than truck tires to accommodate the higher air pressure needed for larger loads. It is important to make always inflate your trailer tires to their maximum psi, which will ensure the best performance and ability to handle the load of your trailer.

Since your Palomino Puma weighs 8,500 lbs you are also going to need to make sure your tires are rated for that much weight. The ST205/75R15 tires we carry such as the Kenda # AM10245 have a maximum load range of D and are rated for 2,150 lbs at 65 psi. For your double axle Puma, that would be right at your 8,500 lb capacity.

You may want to consider upgrading to a larger, ST225/75R15 tire if you have the space; there should be a minimum of 2" between trailer tires on dual axle trailers and 3" to 4" between the tires and fender. For comparison, a ST225/75R15 tire is going to have a diameter that is 1.2" larger than a ST205/75R15 tire, and be 0.8" wider.

If you do have the space for larger, ST225/75R15 tires I recommend going with the Kenda Karrier # AM10303. This is a load range E tire that has a maximum load of 2,830 lbs at 80 psi. It fits 15" x 6", 15" x 6-1/2", 15" x 7" wheels and has a maximum speed rating of 81 mph, though of course I would recommend not exceeding the posted speed limit.

There is also the option of a ST225/75R15 load range D tire from Kenda, the # AM10256 which has a maximum load capacity of 2,540 lbs at 65 psi.

I've added a link to a video review of this tire for you as well as a pair of help articles on trailer tires which you may find useful.
