Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

This adapter plugs into the 4-pin connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

The cable arrived and we'll be camping tomorrow knowing the trailer brakes will be working thanks to your quick shipping and nicely constructed cable for my brake controller. It took 5 minutes to install.

If you are struggling with an older trailer brake set up buy the Tekonsha. Just do it. No more delayed braking, buckling or pulsating just a smooth even slow down of the truck and the trailer at the same time. Installed with the wiring adapter on my 2003 Dodge 2500 Diesel. Simple plug and play. Went around the block a couple of times and had this thing dialed in perfectly. Spend an extra $ or 2 and buy this thing. you will be happy you did.

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

This etrailer part "Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Dodge - #3020-P" is a PERFECT fit for my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Tekonsha P3 brake controller.

After a LOT of research I discovered that in the Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ series (1999-2004) the 2001 model with "factory installed tow package", was the only year that did not have the 'the tucked away blue wire running back to the 7-pin trailer connector at the rear of the car. Instead a prewired connector was installed. According to the Jeep WJ users site, the Mopar part #56020142AB (wire harness with the appropriate connector for 2001 Jeep GC) had been discontinued, but Tekonsha Corp. (brake controller manufacturer) had a suitable replacement part. The page link on WJ Jeeps to the correct part at Tekonsha was broken and a search of Tekonsha's website produced no wiring that would even remotely help.

After crawling under my dash and removing the electrical fuse cover I found a blue connector. I took a photo of the connector so that I hopefully could find a connector that would help me avoid a complete engine compartment to rear bumper wiring installation.

Here on etrailer I found the brake controller I wanted and started looking at what I needed to make it operational. I tried everything I could think of (including writing the etrailer tech) to find out if the "Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Dodge - #3020-P would work for my 2001 Jeep. No one was certain.

Sooo... I decided that at a cost of $14.99 it was worth it to buy - try - and return if necessary. I also figured if 'worst-came-to-worse' I may want to cut off the Dodge connector and use this shielded wire set instead of Tekonsha's wire harness by snipping off the Dodge connector.

5 minutes out of the box my Tekonsha P3 was lit up and a test light confirmed I had power to the factory installed 7-pin trailer connector at the rear using this etrailer part. It snapped into both connections perfectly.

The 30" length sounded adequate, but looked short out of the box. It turns out I have many mounting options with this length. Although it may not be mounted for a day or 2, I've decided to mount it on the left side of the steering wheel column. That's well out of the way of my long legs and yet in easy reach for manually engaging the trailer brake with the hand lever on my brake controller while driving.

I would recommend "Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Dodge - #3020-P" for ANY brake controller installed in a 2001 Jeep GC with the factory installed Mopar/Dodge connector. Just cut off the Tekonsha connector and butt connect the harnesses: BLUE to trailer connector * WHITE to ground - * RED to BRAKE switch (or recommended brake pedal connection point) * BLACK to battery +

Attached photos: original Mopar brake controller harness for factory installed tow package 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee; etrailer's photo of the dodge connector for Tekonsha controller for visual comparison; a photo of the connector found under my dash; a photo of etrailer part #3020-P connected to my underdash connector; a photo showing the reach of the cable for a possible dash mount; and a photo showing the possible reach for a hidden ash tray mount.

I’ve had the Timbren suspension enhancement system for a year now on my ‘99 Dodge 1500 4x4. I purchased this product because I had to tow my bumper pull three horse trailer from South Carolina to N. Central Montana. With a camper top, the bed loaded and the trailer loaded the truck sagged really bad. With the Timbrens on the sag went away completely. Making for a much safer less stressful experience while towing.

by:

This product was a very easy install and initial setup. Only complaint is lack of option when trailer is not hooked up. I would like to present set my boost settings and break output and save them before actually getting hooked to my trailer. Then custom tune it once hooked up. Other than that, everything seems to be top notch.
When it came to the install, I chose to stray away from the typical mounting location and go with a point closer on the center console. If not for that the installation of the P3 would have taken less than 5 minutes from start to finish. Truly plug and play.

2001 Dodge Durango

Purchased the wiring harness for my 2001 Dodge Durango and installed the brake controller. It was very easy, as my vehicle had a tow package installed already. Only took 20 minutes to hook up. Recommend this harness for similar suv's. Tested out perfectly. The price was better than all local sources. Trailer pic attached.

Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Electric brake controller was easy to install on my 2007 Ram 2500 diesel. I purchased the factory connector from e-trailer and snapped right in place. At 1st couldn’t find connector on vehicle but after going on e-trailer FAQ I found it. Picture included. Customer service was outstanding

by:

Installation was super easy with the vehicle specific wiring harness, just plug it in and screw the mounting bracket where you want it. It was that easy! Took about 15 mins or so. The controller works great, I towed about 10k lbs and stopping was very manageable. I would recommend this to anyone!

by:

The brake controller worked great once I figured it out to put it on boost 2 after I replace the whole wire to a 10 gauge instead of a 12 but I don't think it was necessary but anyway it's working great

by:

Plugged right in to my 2005 Dodge Ram 3500. Made brake controller install super easy. Long enough IMO with proper routing as long as you are mounting in the below steering wheel location.

by:

Bought it for my 05 cummins with the harness for the year make and model, plug and play mounted well works awesome

by:

Makes an install super easy. Wasn’t quite long enough for where I put the brake controller ( at the manual gear shift ). Would work for the usual place under the steering column, left or right sides . Etrailer kept me informed several times by email and phone of the back order on this cable. Great customer service. They still fulfilled the order quickly.

by:

Extremely easy to install.... True plug and play.

No issues.

Couldn't be happier

This harness could not make installation and operation of my brake controller any simpler!!! Easily worth twice the price for the simplicity it provides

by:
1999 Dodge Ram Pickup

This is a plug and play with the P3 controller. It was perfect for my application. It is plenty long enough to run your controller over to right of steering column. I actually put mine in the factory ash tray so that I could more easily see it/operate it, without obstructed view of steering wheel. It is a very tidy piece also. Looks great under dash. Service was excellent from sellers and fast shipping even to AK. To bad it isn't free shipping up here haha

by:

I ordered the Tekonsha P3 and a wire harness for my 2006 Dodge 1500. The harness matched perfect and took about 10 minutes to attach it and zip tie it down. The P3 bracket took about 15 minutes and I was ready to go. Thank you all at etrailer for having the right info and the right set up for my vehicle. I say that due to getting the wrong wire harness on items I've ordered elsewhere. If I need anything else for my trailers I will use you all again!

by:

Works great

by:

Plugs right into the blue trailer wiring harness on my '08 Dodge. Makes install just plug and play. Get the harness, save yourself a lot of trouble.

by:

Worked great . Used force meter to test output . Clean in stall. Unit appears to always be powered. Hot in summer heat so will only connect to power when using

Seems to be a wonderful product installed it on my 99 Dodge truck in about 15 minutes plug it in hooked up the trailer went up the road and back worked great all together about 20 minutes done simple and easy back home enjoying a cold beer in back yard

by:

I bought this for my dad's truck. He had called several local businesses about buying a plug and play brake controller and was told by all that there wasn't one made for his truck amd they would have to install and wore one up. I ordered this and installed it in 5 minutes, not including mounting it. It has worked great for him since.

by:

It fit perfectly, made the job go smoother and faster and best of all no stripping/splicing wires, just plug and play.

by:

Worked perfectly

by:

Made install for new controller so simp le.

  • Location of Electric Trailer Brake Controller Connector on a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500
Take a look at the picture I've attached for you. You'll see the connector there. It might not be this easy to find because sometimes it's tucked behind or connected to something up under the dashboard. The connector will be there as long as your 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 came equipped with a factory 4-way or 7-way trailer connector. The adapter to plug into the connector is # 3020-P. I've also linked the install video.
