Parts Needed to Install an Electric Trailer Brake Controller on a 2009 Chevy Traverse
Question:
I have a 2009 Chevy Traverse and want to put a brake controller on it that will allow me to pull a trailer with brakes. I also want to pull a 4 prong trailer without with brakes. I want it to be simple to install. What is the difference between a 6 prong and 7 prong. I am looking brake unit, wiring harnesses?

The 7-Way RV style trailer connector is more common than a 6-Way. The 6-Way will not have a reverse light/accessory circuit pin. They both will have stop, tail, turn, 12 volt, brakes, and ground circuits. I recommend a 7-Way since it is the more common connector. But if the trailer has a 6-Way connector, then it would be better to go with a 6-Way on the vehicle as well.
In order to install a brake controller on your 2009 Chevy Traverse, there are a few parts you will need. If the vehicle already had a factory installed 7-Way trailer connector, you would just need the brake controller and wiring harness. I recommend the Tekonsha P2 with Wiring Harness, # 90885, # 3026-P. It is one of our most popular controllers because it is easy to set up and easy to use.
If the vehicle does not have a trailer connector, you will need to add one using Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # 118450. I have included a link to a video showing a typical installation for you to view. You would then need to add a 4- and 7-Way Installation Kit, # ETBC7, for a 7-Way, or # ETBC6 for a 6-Way. I also recommend a circuit tester, # PTW2993.
