5th Wheel Towing Setup for a 2016 Toyota Tundra
Question:
I have a 2016 Toyota Tundra limited edition. Of course, this is a half ton pickup. Is it realistic to use a fifth wheel hitch on this vehicle. Ive been thinking of buying a travel trailer but would consider a fifth wheel if my vehicle can handle it. Providing that I stay within the weight limits for my truck, is it appropriate to use a fifth wheel hitch?

The towing capacity of your 2016 Toyota Tundra can range from 6,400 lbs to 10,500 lbs depending on options therefore you can haul some 5th wheel trailers as long as they fall below the maximum gross trailer weight (GTW) rating of your truck.
To determine the maximum trailer weight you can tow with your Tundra, you will first need to determine the Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR). The GCWR is the maximum allowed tow rating of the vehicle weight and the trailer weight combined. If you subtract the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of your truck from the (GCWR) that will give you the maximum Gross Trailer Weight (GTW) you can safely tow. This can all be found on the information tag located inside the driver door jamb.
For a 5th wheel towing setup that will work well for you, I recommend the Curt Q20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider part # C16541 for short bed trucks with trailers that have a standard pin box or the Reese 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # RP30047 for long bed trucks or with trailers that have a rotating pin box.
In order to install either of the above 5th wheel hitches you will need a set of base rails and for that I recommend the Reese Quick-Install Custom Base Rails and Installation Kit for 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches part # RP50084-58.
