Solution to Allow 2002 Stepside Ford F-150 Tow a Fifth Wheel Trailer

Question:

I have a 2002 f 150 stepside. I will be towing a 28foot Keystone Springdale 2004 model. Will the Demco Autoslider work on this truck? Thanks

The issue with flare side trucks like what you have is that the bed rails are too narrow to allow a fifth wheel trailer's pin box to turn without interference. There is a solution, but the Demco hitch cannot be used.

Reese has heard reports that using a Sidewinder replacement pin box that locks the pin box together with the fifth wheel hitch and moves the point of rotation 22 inches rearward will allow folks with flareside truck beds to successfully tow a fifth wheel trailer, but they cannot officially confirm it because they haven't tested it.

The Sidewinder you need will depend on the manufacturer and model number of the pin box on your fifth wheel. This information should be provided on a sticker somewhere on your pin box. I'll link you to an article with more information about how the Sidewinder works and which models replace which OEM pin boxes.

For a rail kit you'd then want the custom install kit part # RP50042-58 for your 2002 Ford F-150 then for a hitch a stationary # RP30047. The Sidewinder installed on your trailer prevents you from needing a slider hitch.
