Turn Signals are Not Working with the Tekonsha T-One # 118415 Installed on Tow Vehicle

Question:

I purchased a #118415 wiring harness a while back. I installed it per directions. Very easy. Problem is sometimes they work and other times they dont. I am not an auto mechanic but I am a master electrician. redid all the grounds, replace the plug on the trailer. When I test the turn signals they work the first time, I go right back and test them the second time and they dont work. Maybe you can help me out. Thanks Al, I will look forward to your reply.

If you are just testing it by hooking up your trailer and watching the lights, then what I recommend doing is using a Circuit Tester # PTW2992 to test the 4-Way flat connector on the Tekonsha T-One # 118415. This will help you to determine if the problem is on your trailer side or vehicle side. If the functions all work correctly when you are testing just the connector, then the problem is on your trailer. If not, then you maybe need a new # 118415 since it connects in-line with your taillights.

To verify that the problem is on your trailer you will want to use an alternate 12V power source, like the battery off of your tow vehicle. You will just ground the negative terminal and then use the positive terminal to test all of the functions on your trailer side 4-Way flat.

If you find that the problem is on the trailer and you have already made sure that all of the grounds have a solid connection to a clean, bare metal surface, then you will need to inspect the wiring. Looks for any places where the wiring is bent, exposed, corroded, or damaged and replace as necessary. You can use 16 Gauge Wire # 16-1-1 and Butt Connectors # DW05744-5 to replace your wiring.

Another possibility is that your trailer is drawing too much power. If you have a decent amount of clearance lights on your trailer you can test this by disconnecting a few, one by one, and see if that fixes your problem.

If everything looks okay both on your tow vehicle and your trailer, then you will want to take your setup to a shop so that they can physically inspect it.
