Why Wont the Yakima HoldUp Fit a Class I Trailer Hitch on a 2017 Honda Accord

Question:

Just purchase a 1 1/4 hitch Yakima holdup and it will not go through because there is a nut or stopper inside the hitch on the bottom preventing the rack for sliding through to align the hole for the pin. What is the purpose of that nut or stopper? Do i have to grind it out so i can use the hitch and the rack? Thanks

The problem is that the hitch you have is a Class I hitch, probably made by Reese, Draw-Tite, or Hidden Hitch. Those hitches have a stop punched into the shank to prevent the use of Class II accessories from being used. It is meant to prevent someone from overloading a Class I hitch.

The Yakima HoldUp for 1-1/4 inch hitches, # Y02445, is for Class II hitches that do not have that stop. In order to use that rack you would have to remove that stop. However doing so is not a simple process, will void the hitch warranty and could also void the rack warranty since the hitch and rack were not meant to be used together.

I recommend going with a similar bike rack that is rated for use in a Class I hitch. Some options you can use include the Kuat Transfer V2 # KU74FR and Saris Freedom Thule T2 Pro XTR # TH23JV.

I have linked videos of these racks below and included a link to the platform bike racks that are Class I compatible.
