To wire the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller # 90885 in your 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee with factory 7-way, you will also need the Draw-Tite Wiring Kit # 5506, which includes 25 ft. duplex wire and the circuit breakers that are required for installation.
The Prodigy P2 itself will come with a pigtail harness. One end of this will plug right into the back of the brake controller and the other end will have 4 bare wires - white, red, blue and black.
First, you will need to run a couple wires through the firewall in your Jeep, which will supply power to the brake controller and ground to it as well. Starting under the hood, you should see a grommet on the left side that you can cut into with a utility knife to provide a hole large enough for the wires to go through. You will then take one end of the duplex wire from the # 5506 and push it through. Now you can go back underneath the dash inside your vehicle and pull it through a little. Once that is done, you will start making the needed connections.
Take your utility knife and split the duplex wire that you ran through the fire wall to separate the black and white wires. After stripping the wires back, you will take 2 yellow butt connectors included with the brake controller and crimp them onto both wires. You will connect the white wire into the white wire coming from the brake controller. Then connect the black wire into the black wire on the brake controller.
Next, there should be a blue wire already in your vehicle tucked behind the left side of your dash by the kick panel. Pull this wire out and install another butt connector and crimp it down, then connect it with the blue wire coming from the brake controller.
Next you will need to use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to find which wire behind your vehicle's brake pedal is the cold side of the brake light switch. The wire you want to splice into will only have power when the brake pedal is pressed down. This wire will be connected to the red wire on the brake controller.
Lastly, you will split the other end of the duplex wire under the hood and connect them to the power and ground on your battery using the 30-amp circuit breaker included in the kit # 5506.
I have included an installation video on a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. This falls within the same generation as your 2000 model, so the process should be very similar. I recommend watching this to get visuals and a more detailed description.
