Determining if 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Head Can Be Lowered to Allow Trailer to Ride Level

Question:

I just installed the B and W Companion 5th wheel hitch and hooked up my trailer. My original setting was high and all the way back on the pivot arms. I measured and I can move forward OK. Im wondering about dropping into a lower position as the trailer is riding high in front. My big concern is the side to side pivot of the 5th wheel plate. can you tell me how may degrees it will pivot? Or, give me some other advice to help me determine how much lower I can go? Thank you,

When measuring for the proper clearance for your 5th wheel, you will want to measure the space between the top of the truck bed side rails and the underside of the camper when the truck is parked on level ground. Taking this measurement on level ground helps ensure you will still have enough clearance between the truck and camper when the hitch head does pivot. For sufficient clearance, you will want to have 6 inches between the truck bed sides and the trailer.

The B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch has 3 vertical height adjustments. The highest adjustment places the hitch head at 18-1/4 inches from the floor of the truck bed. The middle adjustment is 17-1/4 inches tall, and the lowest adjustment is 16-1/4 inches tall.

You mentioned that you measured your clearance with the hitch on the highest setting and found you have sufficient clearance. As long as you will still have at least 6 inches of clearance between the truck and trailer with the hitch head 1 or 2 inches lower than its current position, you will be fine to lower the hitch head.
