What Stabilizing Strap is Needed for Curt Class I Hitch C11286 for 2016 Subaru Crosstrek

Question:

Regarding the C11286 hitch, it says All non-trailer loads - bike racks, cargo carriers and so forth - should be supported with stabilizing straps. Failure to properly support these loads will void your hitch warranty from CURT. What type of straps are you referring to? Straps to assist in holding down cargo? Im just asking because the bike rack I plan to use in the near future doesnt require any straps - the bike is held solidly in place.

The strap they're referring to is # 18050. One end of the strap would loop around the upright of the bike rack, the other would clip into the seam between the hatch and the vehicle roof. I've linked you to a video showing how that works.

Because of the small wing above the rear window that the strap would need to pass over, I'm not sure I'd be comfortable using the strap, my fear being that the strap could abrade the paint over time or damage the wing. So this leaves you with three options. You can use the strap and possibly damage something, not use the strap and abandon your hitch warranty coverage or you could go with the Draw-Tite Class I hitch, part # C11286.

I've also linked you to some installation videos for both hitches.
