Your owners manual will be the final authority on towing capacities for your 2014 Jeep Patriot. Most of the info I found on your vehicle said 2,000 lbs was the max capacity, but you will need to verify that with the owners manual since different equipped versions of the same vehicle can have different capacities.
That being said, you can use a trailer hitch on your vehicle that has a higher capacity than your vehicle. You would just have to be sure not to exceed the vehicle capacity. So if you went wit the Class II Draw Tite hitch part # 36423 that has been confirmed as a fit for your vehicle you would just have to use the capacities of the vehicle that are listed in the owners manual. I attached an install video for this hitch for you to check out as well.
The manufacturer recommended drawbar for the 2014 Jeep Patriot is, part # 36061, which needs to be used in the rise position only. You will also need a hitch pin and clip, part # PC2, and a properly sized hitch ball, part # 19256 (1-7/8 inch diameter) or # 19258 (2 inch diameter).
If you do not already have trailer wiring, you will need the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness, part # 118552, to set your vehicle up to power your trailer lights.
