Tongue Weight Capacities of Trailer Hitches Available for 2016 Ford Flex
Question:
I would like to mount a wheel chair/scooter lift on a Ford Flex class III hitch. I am concerned about the strength of the unibody supporting 400 lbs extended several inches from the receiver. Does the load calculation differ when comparing towing tongue weight to suspended carrier weight. If so what would be the appropriate amount of weight to suspend from a hitch attached to a unibody vehicle?

As long as the weight of the carrier plus the weight of the wheelchair/scooter comes in under the tongue weight capacity of the hitch being used on the vehicle, the fact that the Flex has a unibody won't be relevant.
When Curt designed the # C13110 for dual exhaust models and the # 13551 for single exhaust models, they did extensive testing to ensure that the vehicles could handle the tongue load the hitches were rated for. As long as no extenders or adapters are used that adds distance between the scooter carrier and the receiver, the # C13110 is good for 400 lbs of tongue weight, and the # 13551 is good for 500 lbs.
