How to Determine the Correct Hub for My MacGregor Sailboat Trailer

Question:

The bolt pattern is 5 on 4 1/2 and the weight is 3500 lbs. The inner bearing is L68149 and the outer bearing is L44649. The wheels are steel, and the hub has DICO 1685. I'm trying to replace the hubs and bearings.

Determining the correct wheel bearings, seals or hubs for a trailer is normally done by using the existing inner and outer wheel bearing part numbers and grease seal part number. This is the only way to be sure that the correct parts are ordered. The bearing part numbers will ensure that you get the proper size and weight capacity parts for your application.

When replacing the hub you will also need to be sure that you measure the wheel bolt pattern (see link) and, if the axle capacity is larger than 3,500 pounds, you need to determine that size of the wheel studs themselves. Another consideration is the style of wheel on the trailer. Many times Aluminum wheels require longer wheel studs. If this is the case you may need to order longer studs to accommodate the wheels.

If you would like to pull the hub on one of your trailer axles and record the part numbers, I will be glad to help you determine the correct hub to order. Let me know the part numbers you come up with and the wheel bolt pattern and stud size.

Thanks for getting back to me with the part numbers and axle capacity. Since your axle capacity is 3,500 pounds and your inner and outer bearings are L68149 and L44649 respectively you will need the Trailer Hub Assembly - 3,500 lbs Axles - 5 on 4-1/2, item # 84545BX, for a standard spindle and idler hub. If you have an EZ-Lube hub with a grease zerk in the end then you will need the Trailer Hub Assembly - 3,500 lbs. Axles - 5 on 4-1/2 - E-Z Lube, # 84545UC1-EZ, for an idler axle. If you have brakes on the trailer you will need the Trailer Hub & Drum Assembly - 3,500 lbs. Axles - 5 on 4-1/2, item # 84546UC3, and if the brake axle has the EZ-Lube Grease Zerk you will need the Trailer Hub & Drum Assembly - 3,500 lbs Axles - 5 on 4-1/2 - E-Z Lube, item # 84546UC3-EZ.
