Recommendation For Replacement Brakes For 1997 MacGregor 26X Sailboat Trailer

Question:

Hi, I have a Boat trailer. It is the factory trailer for a 1997 MacGregor 26X sailboat. Do you know what type of replacement brakes it uses? I'll need pads rotors, springs backing plate slave cylinder hydraulic system. Preferably marine application. Thanks.

We will be glad to help but unfortunately there are all kinds of options and possibilities. The best way to find the right replacement brakes is to find the weight capacity of your axle (see attached picture), the size of your brake mounting flange (4-bolt pattern most common), and your drum diameter for drum brakes and rotor diameter for disc brakes.

If your trailer has a 3,500-lb axle with drum brakes and a 4-bolt brake flange, I recommend something like the Hydraulic Brake Kit, Item # AKFBBRK-35-D. This kit is marine grade and allows for free-backing. It has automotive-grade friction pads and Dacromet-coated backing plates that resist rust. Left-hand and right-hand brake assembly and mounting bolts are included. This kit works with most standard hub-and-drum assemblies including those made by Dexter, Lippert, and AL-KO.

If your trailer has a 3,500-lb axle with disc brakes and a 4-bolt brake flange, I recommend something like the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit, Item # K2R35DKG. This kit is great for marine use and includes 2 Dacromet rotors, 2 KodaGuard-plated calipers, 2 Dacromet-plated mounting brackets, and 4 stainless steel mounting bolts.

If these do not work for you, send me more information about your trailer and I will make a specific recommendation.

I have attached some help articles and a video to assist you with your project.
