Winch Recommendation for Hoisting 600 lbs in the Air

Question:

Hello- I have a large skylight about fifteen feet up. I am looking to put one or more planting traysf for hanging plants and such up into the skylight. Im looking to use either a manual or electric winch to raise and lower the trays as needed for maintenance / watering / blocking the skylight for privacy / etc. I dont think the weight will be more than 600 pounds if I did one entire tray, but regardless of the weight, I need to be sure its safely locked in position and doesnt come crashing down. What winches would you recommend? Thanks for any feedback and design thoughts.

Expert Reply:

Only worm gear winches should be used for hoisting things as they are the only ones rated for that.

For a winch the Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch # DL10954 would work great as it has more than enough capacity. It also can be mounted to the ceiling to allow the winch to hoist the engine easier.
