Recommended Parts to Re-Install Lock Mechanism on 1997 Thule Rooftop Cargo Box

Question:

I needed to do some repairs on an old Thule Classic Cargo Box circa 1997. I had to drill out the rivets that attached the locking mechanism to the box. Upon measuring the rivets, they seems like an odd size. Just a little larger in diameter than a standard 3/16” pop rivet, but not 1/4. Do you know what these rivets are and do you sell replacements?

Expert Reply:

Thule does not supply the cargo box lock mounting rivets as replacement parts; this is because these are not intended to be removed. But you certainly can substitute other hardware, and that does not necessarily even have to be rivets, to re-install the lock assembly on your '97 Thule cargo box. Since this hardware will see some exposure to the elements I suggest that you select stainless-steel bolts, washers and nuts. Your local full-service hardware store should have a decent assortment of stainless hardware. You may want/need to enlarge the holes in the box to allow them to accept your chosen new hardware since the original rivets were a metric size.

I also recommend that you use a silicone sealant like # LT37467 to ensure that the box contents are well-protected from entry of water and dirt.
