    V-Bar Icebreakers

    V-Bar Icebreakers

These chains are outstanding in serious winter weather conditions because the V-bar studs can bust through intense ice and packed snow. So, you'll be able to get to work and back home again even in the toughest weather. You can also use them if you ever go off-roading and end up in a mud-digging situation. These chains are going to help give your vehicle purchase to pull out and keep moving.

    Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. These chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

    Installing Tire Chains

    Installing these chains is simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

    1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks.

    Drape chains over tire.

    2. Drape the chain over the tire, ensuring that the V-bar studs face away from the tire.

    Make connections

    3. On the back of the tire, pull the chain tight and hook the ends together. Repeat this on the front of the tire.

    Attach optional tensioners

    4. Drive forward 2-3 vehicle lengths and recheck the chain tension. Tighten the chain as needed by moving the hook to the next link.

    Attach optional tensioners

If needed, rubber adjusters (sold separately) can be used to help give you a tight fit. Make sure the hooks on the adjusters face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

    Quick Tips:

    • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
    • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

    Tire size on sidewall

    185/60-15

    1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
    2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
    3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

I had high hopes for my purchase since there was great reviews. Unfortunately that was not my experience. First issue, only part of order showed up when delivered. Reached out to etrailer to investigate. A few days later they shipped out the other set of chains I ordered. That issue was resolved. Second issue, I knew I would need to trim back the extra links on my chains, I was shocked as to how much I needed to cut off. It included a section of the ladder chain. Which ultimately wasn’t really an issue, I just think it should be clear this is a cut to fit tire chain, not a trim. I double checked the website, the canvas bag, and my tires, this was an appropriate set for those tires. Ultimately I’m very satisfied with the product. Not satisfied with seller/delivery.

Well that is odd. These chains show a confirmed fit for all models of the Toyota Tundra with the tire sizes 26570-16. I have sent your information over to our customer service department for them to look into this for you.

Quick and easy. One of my chain tensioner's broke and they had new ind out to me asap. I’ve always had a good experience with these folks.

    by:

These are first rate quality HD tire chains. They're a good fit on my tires. As suggested, I practiced putting them on for first time in dry weather. From watching video instructions, I was able to attach and adjust chains w/out issue. I tightened them with three 15 " rubber bungees. Haven't had to use them yet.

    by:

The chains work as expected. Got me out of the mud twice (2wd pickup). Don't spin and dig holes before applying or you won't be able to stretch the chain around the sunken in tire. I needed to jack it up once to get the chains on then they worked like a charm. I have not used in snow or on road.

    by:

I’m impressed. These tire chains are the real deal. I looked at various options online, Amazon, etc. I found etrailer. First, the web page is packed with info, tutorials, etc. once I ordered there was continuous communication. I downgraded from a 4x4 to a 4x2, and drive up to Buffalo, NY, from coastal Carolina. These chains are impressive and will provide traction and ease of mind going through the snow belt areas along Lake Erie and parts of the blue ridge mountains. I’ve hit heavy snow on this trip and wished I had a good tire chain. This resolved it. Installing is a breeze be sure to get the tire chain adjusters with them! Excellent service!

Never owned tire chain so I'm not an expert but they are easy to install. Note I did this in my dry driveway. I hope I never need to uses them but if I do I think they will work fine. Thanks etrailer for the awesome service you provided.

    by:

Chains worked great on my 2014 1500 chevy. Used on a late season elk hunt. Easy to take on and off by myself. Had a bunch of refreeze on top of deep snow, and these kept my tires on the trail and not sliding off the mountain.

    by:

Excellent chains. Used them extensively this last November getting up and down a snowed over road and snow/iced over rocky trail up the mountain in CO. They didn’t break on the rocks and got great traction on ice, got me out of several miles of 3ft of snow with ice underneath. I highly recommend the steel spring chain tensions. When properly installed you can get these chains nice and tight. I can only run chains on my rear tires due to upper control arm clearance issues (‘08 Tacoma) so I’m giving my second pair to my brother (‘12 f150) for his rear tires.

Chains are still going strong, I make sure the wash and dry them after each season. Would definitely buy again and I definitely recommend the metal spring tensioners.

We just finished two years of full-time travel around the US. I bought two sets of chains and they fit snuggly, as expected, on my LT 275/65 R18 tires. I also bought two types of chain binders to keep them tight and positioned correctly in different conditions. So, that's 4 chain & spring binders AND 4 rubber binders ... just in case. I mounted them all to test the fit and practice my skills and drove 4 mi. on a dirt road. All went well. As we zig zag around the US it's a smart move to carry these chains and binders with us. Many states in the west have highways and roads that mandate use of chains. I'm glad I didn't need to use them last year but I'm confident we're ready if need be. Thanks to etrailer for great documentation and Fabulous customer service!

    by:

I bought these because they claim to be durable enough to be used off-road. The first time I used them off-road (albeit a very difficult trail), they broke and proceeded to rip my emergency brake line off of my rear driver side before I had noticed they broke. Not exactly the best experience I've had with chains.

    2012 Ram 3500

These chains are well built. My 1 ton truck was in 6” deep snow when I chained up. The truck was able to tractor right up A steep hill. The binder is stout steel, not a stamped piece prone to bending. I used rubber tensioners. The combo worked great. All of my use has been off pavement this far. I bought two sets and would do it again.

    2022 Ford F-150

They will fit a NEW 275/65/18 Goodyear Territory. It is a snug fit. pretty sure I'll need rubber tensioners but not sure. I'll try them on the 245/75/17 full studded Goodyear Winter tires but expect they won't be snug.

These are very heavy duty chains compared to my old 9.50/16.5 chains V bar 35 years ago.

    by:

Chains appear to be excellent quality. Haven't tried them on the truck yet but etrailer's web site made it easy to ID the size of chains I needed so should be good to go. Thanks etrailer.

    • Are There On/Off Road Tire Chains Which Fit Both 275/65-18 and 245/70-17 Tires?
According to Titan Chain the Chains # TC2828 will not fit both your tire sizes. While they will fit on the 275/65R18 tires they are not the correct size for the 245/70R17. The difference could lead to damage on your wheels. You would want the Chains # TC3810 for the 245/70R17 tires. I was not able to find any chains which will fit both your size tires so you are going to be best to get a set for each truck along with Tensioners # TCMA2 so you can just keep them in the truck at all times.
