Wiring Harness for 2003 Toyota Tacoma to Allow Installation of Hopkins Backup Camera HM50002

Question:

I purchased a model 50002 backup camera system and will be installing it on my Tacoma 2003. While I have a factory installed tow package, I do not have a 7 way connector. Can you help with a wiring diagram? Thanks.

The Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera and Hitch Aligner System # HM50002 is designed for use with a 7-way-equipped vehicle since that type of connector provides the reverse light signal to activate it when you're backing up. Since your Tacoma has only a 4-pole flat trailer connector (which does NOT include a reverse light signal) you'll need to add one.

The Hopkins system uses a round U.S. Car connector format for installation. You will need to install Hopkins Universal Wiring Harness # HM40985. Your 4-pole connector's existing white, brown, yellow and green wires will splice into those on the Hopkins harness color-for-color. These wires are, respectively, ground, running lights, left turn/stop and right turn/stop.

You will then use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 on the wires at one of the taillight assemblies to find the one wire that carries the reverse light signal. You will need a capable helper to sit in the truck with the emergency brake on and brake pedal pressed while shifting the truck into reverse. The tester will let you know which wire carriers the reverse light signal and this wire will splice into the purple wire on the Hopkins harness. The harness includes the connectors for all of the splicing, but you'll want to use one quick-splice # SWC501915-1 or to tap into the reverse light circuit.

Since auto makers can change the wire color they use for any given function, it is always best to test. We do not have a wiring diagram for the truck.
