How To Install Brake Controller On 2012 Nissan Frontier Without Tow Package
Question:
NISSAN 2012 FRONTIER WITH NO TOW PACKAGE. I PURCHASED WIRING KITS FROM ETRAILER AND INSTALLED A 7 PIN SYSTEM WHICH WORKS GREAT. I NOW OWN A LARGER TRAILER WITH ELECTRIC BRAKES AND NEED TO HOOK UP A CONTROLLER. I INSTALLED THE 4 WIRE ADAPTER HARNESS BY STEERING WHEEL TO CONTROLLER. CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT COLOR CODE IS? HAD TO CUT WIRES CAUSE MODULAR PLUG WONT FIT MY CONTROLLER? ALSO** DO I NEED A RELAY TO SEND POWER TO BRAKES?

Since auto manufacturers use different color wires and do not stick to one specific color all the time, the best way to install any electrical components is to use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 and test the wires by function and not by color.
If you do not have a brake controller, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. This is a proportional brake controller that applies the trailer brakes in the exact same proportion to the vehicle brakes.
On a Nissan, the stop light wire is typically Red with a Green tracer, but using the circuit tester to find the wire that only shows power when the brake pedal is depressed is the wire you are looking for.
On the Nissan you would connect the Red wire on the vehicle to the black wire on the controller, the stop light explained above, the black wire on the Frontier to the white wire on the brake controller which is the ground. The brown wire with a white tracer would be connected to the blue wire on the brake controller.
You will need 2 circuit breakers when installing the brake controller and the wiring for the 7-way. You will need to use a 40 amp breaker like part # 9510 between the power wire on the 7-way connector and the battery.
You will also need a 20 amp circuit breaker like part # PK54220 which is attached between the black power wire on the brake controller and the battery. Check out the attached drawing that shows how the wiring is run when installing a brake controller.
