7-Way and 4-Way Recommendation for a 2001 Toyota 4Runner with a 4-Way for Trailer Lights
Question:
I am trying to retro-wire a vehicle, using a HM43385 7-point/4point trailer wiring connector to my older 2001 Toyota 4 Runner. I have two trailers to interchange, with different electrical connections. The new trailer to be applied is light and I have no trailer brake need issues, but it is still a small camp trailer, wired for 7-point connection. As stated, I have need to maintain my 4-point connection OEM-installed with factory connector-Toyota old style. I have looked for a way to just quick connect HM43385, but the upstream connector appears to be different First, I am unsure if the double connector part HM40975 is internally wired to allow energy to both 4-point to 7-point plug ins. I need both types to remain operational and be wired to the vehicle electrical source. I have seen the corresponding pigtail part PK11998, or similar too. My older Toyota has a connection clip for the existing 4-point system upstream from the actual trailer connection. Since I dont need back up lights and/or trailer brake leads, can I just splice/connect the corresponding wires to the OEM harness, and have it electrify BOTH 4point and 7point connections downstream? If so, what parts to I minimally need to retro fit? Many thanks!

Expert Reply:
Since you have a 4-way currently installed on your 2001 Toyota 4Runner, need a 7-way that will also retain a functional 4-way, and don't need to operate trailer brakes your best option would be the part # 37185. Your 4-Way will plug into this adapter and it will give you a 7-way and a 4-way that will operate the trailer taillights.
