Adapter Needed to Use Cargo Carrier for 2 Inch Hitch on 2014 Ford Focus w/ 1-1/4 Inch Class I Hitch
Question:
I am going to buy the Draw-tite hitch for my 2014 Ford Focus. I will be using a carrier basket that has a 2 inch fitting. If I buy an adapter so it can fit the 1 1/4 inch hitch will it still be safe/effective? I just want to know if it will work just as well before I buy it. Also, the reason why I am buying it is because it is because my friend is offering it to me almost free. Thanks in advance

Yes, you can use a hitch adapter like the 1-1/4 Inch to 2 Inch, # HTAD, in the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver, # C11158, to allow you to use the cargo carrier/basket for the 2 inch hitch. In addition to the adapter you will need hitch pin and clip # PC2 and # PC3.
You will just need to keep in mind that using an adapter like # HTAD reduces the capacity of a hitch by 50 percent so in this case you would have a reduced carrying capacity of 100 lbs. This carrying capacity will need to take into account the weight of the carrier and some can be very heavy, 60 - 70 lbs for example, which would leave you with 30 - 40 lbs for cargo.
Although your friend's carrier will cost you next to nothing, the cost of the adapter plus the inconvenience of the reduced capacity may make it worthwhile to check out a new cargo carrier for a 1-1/4 inch hitch. I have attached a link to these for you.
