Does Installing an Engine Oil Cooler and Remote Oil Filter Require Adding More Oil

Question:

I have a 1994 Chevy K1500 350 and I want to install an external oil cooler and remote filter. How does the external capacity of the cooler and filter affect the oil capacity of the engine. Do you mount the cooler so that it drains back into the engine? Or does it store additional oil other than is in the oil pan?

Expert Reply:

You will need to add oil to compensate for the extra capacity of an oil cooler and filter on your 1994 Chevy K1500. These components will retain some oil when the engine is not running, much like your current oil filter, but it will not be to their full capacity.

The remote oil filter can be mounted anywhere in the engine compartment.
